Easy for anyone to grow, even if you can’t keep a house plant alive!!!!!   Have you ever wanted to grow mushrooms, but don’t want to wait two months, risk contamination and have to start all over again? Leave all that time and worry in the past with our colonized all in one grow bags.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is typically due to lack of air flow and is referred to as a stall out. There is a quick fix. Just place the bag in front of a fan for a couple days and it will re-stimulate the mycelium.

The mycelium growth that occurs for manure loving and most gourmet mushrooms is white. If you see a blue-green color. That is a common contaminate called Trichoderma. You can wait and see if the mycelium from your manure loving mushroom can fight off the contamination, but if the majority of the bag turn blue-green the bag needs to be thrown out. If you see black mold of any type you must throw out the bag immediately.

When harvesting mushrooms there are 2 factors to consider. Does the mushroom drop spores or not? If a mushroom drops spores most people like to harvest the mushroom right before the vail breaks releasing the spores onto the block. If you aren't concerned about spore drop, allow mushroom caps to expand out to 90%. There is no need to wash off the block if spores drop on it since it will soak in water for 24-48 hours between flushes. For mushrooms who don't drop spores, allow them to get to 100% maturity or desired cap look.

  • A spray bottle of 70% or 91% isopropyl alcohol or alcohol wipe.
  • Spore syringe or liquid culture.
  • A roll of paper towels.
  • Latex or nitrile exam gloves
  • Lighter or butane torch

Yes it can! Our customer average 4 flushes per bag. Our bags are formulated for multiple flushes providing a great value and experience.

Almost any manure loving mushroom species will produce fruit bodies due to our proprietary blend.

We recommend a minimum of 4-6 ccs of spore syringe or liquid culture. Larger amounts of up to 20ccs increase colonization speed.

Colonized Mushroom Grow Bag

Easy for anyone to grow, even if you can’t keep a house plant alive!!!!! Have you ever wanted to grow mushrooms, but don’t want to wait two months, risk contamination and have to start all over again? Leave all that time and worry in the past with our colonized all in one grow bags. Our Blue Caterpillar colonized mushroom grow bags have had over 20 years of development. Featuring individually hydrated corn and rye, coco coir, horse and cow manure, gypsum, vermiculite and a proprietary hydrating supplement. On top of a premium growing medium our kits include isolated phenotype genetics that produce large yields, high alkaloid levels and multiple flushes. In fact, some of our genetics produce even larger flushes for flush 2 and 3.

Do colonized mushroom grow bags work?

Yes!!! A colonized grow bag is the easiest way to grow mushrooms. With all the steps taken care of beforehand by our professional mycologist including making the substrate, hydrating the grain, autoclaving, inoculating, breaking and shaking and keeping humidity and temperatures ideal before we ship to you. All you have to do is roll down the outer packaging and place the grow bag in indirect sunlight or your preferred light source. Then just simply watch it grow, again and again.

How long does a colonized mushroom grow bag take? How to use one.

The average time from when you open your outer package until your first harvest is 2 ½ to 3 weeks. A colonized mushroom grow bag is super easy to use. All you have to do is roll down the outer packaging halfway down the grow bag and place it in indirect sunlight or your preferred light source. Within 7-10 days you should start to see “pins” forming. These “pins” are the very beginning of the mushroom formation and will become the caps of the mushroom. Over the next few days, they will rapidly grow and become GIANT full-sized mushrooms.

How much do you get from a colonized grow bag?

2 to 4 dried ounces per grow bag!!! That might seem like a lot for a 4 pound bag, but on top of being a superior grow bag with optimum nutrient and moisture levels it also comes with our proven isolated genetics. Through the tedious process of isolation we have chosen the fastest growing and largest producing varieties so you have the most success no matter if you are a beginner or seasoned grower.

“I have been trying to grow mushrooms for the past 6 months without much success. I tried a mono tub and had contamination issues to start (was a little ambitious), second I tried a grow bag and genetics from another company. The process took 3 months and my end result was less than ideal. I had great success my first time with the Blue Caterpillar bags and only took 2 and a half weeks”

FAQ

What temperature should I keep my kit at?

The ideal temperature range for the grow bag is 68-72F and be sure to keep it under 74F.

Where do I place my grow bag?

The most important thing is not to place your grow bag in direct sunlight. Anywhere near a window outside of direct sunlight is ideal. Many of our customers place them in a bathroom with an outdoor window, kitchen counter top or in an unused room.

I want to use a grow light. Which type of light would you recommend?

There are various types of mushroom grow lights on the market, you can have success using a fluorescent light. If you want to be more advanced a salt water aquarium light works great since they provide a wider spectrum including more blue and purple light.

How do I get additional flushes?

After harvesting the mature mushrooms simply fill the bag with water until the block is submerged and tape the top of the bag shut. 24-48 hours later cut the top corner of the bag to pour out the water, then tape shut the corner of the bag you cut off. You're ready to grow again and again.

My mushrooms and top of my kit suddenly turned really dark purple, what do I do?

No need to worry, these are spores from the mushroom. Some of our mushroom varieties drop spores and are the cycle of life for fungi. Harvest the mushrooms immediately and use a wet paper towel to wipe off the top of the caps and stems before drying for better appeal. Leave spores inside the bag and fill with water to start the reflushing cycle.

How do I know my mushrooms are ready for harvet?

For mushrooms that drop spores and if you want to harvest them before hand the cap should starting to flatten and the veil (the thin membrane under the cap starts to break) If you are growing an albino, a strain that doesn’t drop spores or don’t care about spore drop you can wait until the cap is completely flat or becomes wavy.

Are these grow kits legal?

Yes these colonized grow bags are fully legal since the colonized block contains no banned active components in it. We sell all of our kits for research and microscopy use only.

How do I dry my mushrooms?

There are numerous ways to dry your mushrooms. The simplest way is to place them on a a few paper towels and have a fan blow on them at low speed. The lower the humidity of your room the faster the mushrooms will dry out. You can also purchase a food dehydrator. When using a food dehydrator it is best to keep the temperature below 100F and run multiple cycles till the desired dryness. A freeze dryer is the best method but they are very expensive for a hobby mycologist.

What and where is the best place to store my dried mushrooms?

The freezer is the best place to store your dried mushrooms and they can keep up to 5 years if properly dried and sealed.
